ok so im looking at ym car with the intent to repaint it this summer... either spraybomb it myself or save up the 2k that ill need to get it done... now heres my dilema.... im worried that if i bomb it it wont come out as nice as i want it... i mean ive done smaller scale projects and they have come out looking excelent.. im just torn because i want it to look good but i dont know if i have the money to have it done the right way... there are alot of shops around here that will do it so i guess i should start looking around....
ohh heres another question... i know that a reputable shop will cut and weld new steel in rust spots but as with all 3rd gen montes im starting to get rust along the bottom of the doors on the inside... the dreiver side is much worse than the passanger and im worried about that because i dont have access to a welder to do it mself....
ohh and would they drop the price if i did all the work minus the primer and paint??? i would assume so because of less labor but is it worth the time im going to have to put into it?? i have the time and the knowhow but not the experience that those guys have... ive done it once or twice.... not every hour of the work week....

Just as information Macco is offering a complete paint job for like $200.
You will need to do all the prep work befoer they spray.
Having the right or correct tool for the job does make it go faster and sometimes easier. Still......... you can do decent enough job without having the $2,000 tool you've seen other's use to do the same work. Many times I'd had to improvise to get a job done.
Some things that can help a guy out is making friends with other car guys that live near you. They can often offer up experience, tools, and advice you don't have. I was such a person years ago. I made friends with older car guys who knew a lot more then I did. And if I needed welding done I knew a guy who would weld for me for the price of a coke. Meaning cheap.
If you want to paint your car, think about having to do the job over again. Do you feel like doing the work again once you feel it's complete? Most would answer, "No!"
So taking the time, doing the job as right or correct as possible the first time can actually save money in the long run.
I've known guys who loved the car they owned. They put hours of work in to the car, got it looking nice, only to have the work they did not last. They lost interest in the car and it got junked.
A sad ending for such a nice piece of art.

yeah that maaco paint job is just that... they tape and spray the paint... i had a frined who paid for their 300$ package and the paint ran when it rained cuz they never cleared it..... i mean its just like every other thing in life... the quality reflects the price... i could do it myself for maybe around 3-500 with spray cans and alot of time... but like i said there is some rust spots that i dont think i can patch myself... it would be better if i left that to the pros... either way i have plenty of time to think about it...

You may not be interested in this. A guy painted his '69 Dodge Charger this way and posted pics of the results. He rolled the paint on the car.
He said he used self leveling paint which made all the different in the outcome. From the pics posted the car looked great.
A guy on Chevy Talk found the post about this Charger. He asked other members their opinon on what this Charger owner did to his car? But then he tried this paint technic on his '55 Chevy 2-door Hardtop. It too looked decent.

Repainting the car the color(s) it already is makes the work a little easier. First there's not as much prep work as far as cutting in, or the painting of door jambs, and hood & trunk lips another color such as when you change the color of a car.
If you plan to primer over top of the old paint then this point really doesn't matter. Primer is designed to cover. This also means covering an old paint job.
The spots of the car the old paint is still good or intact can make the job easier in the sense you only need clean, scuff, clean, and re-shoot. But only as long as you plan on painting the same color it is. It makes it cheaper cause less supplies are needed to get the new paint on.
Painting like horsepower can be limited only by how much money you have or want to spend.
Back about 25 years ago a guy had a '55 Chevy 2-door Sedan painted a real heavy metal flake green. The inside of the car was all white. It was cool. There was a rumor the car was painted in january. On the drive home parts of the paint started to fly off the car in large strips. The owner never made it home with the car. He turned around and went right back to the body shop that painted the car. According to the rumor, the entire car had to be re-painted.

Mike, Seriously do not Spray Can the car!!! You will regret it later on.
I have seen a few cars done with the roller and lots of wet sanding come out nice. Not sure if I'd do it.
Macco sucks! Plain and Simple, they hack everything and really ruin a car.
Best thing to do, in my opinion, is save the cash now, get the mechanical stuff done and then get it painted by a professional. It'll cost a bit more, but your car will look a hell of a lot better!

The cops knew this too. Quite a few of us got in trouble cause of it. I had this idiot girlfriend who one night insisted on drinking and hanging out there. She climbed in the back of my car and fell asleep with her open beer on the dash of my car. I had fallen asleep waiting on her to wake up. What did wake me up was a voice reciting my license number and asking for information on my car. I happened to look up and see this beer on my dash. As easy as I could I reached up, grabbed her beer and stuck it in the console of my car. Then while the cop was looking the other direction I got in the driver seat, fired up the engine and drove off. This cop was going to have my car towed. With us in it.
