Here is a cool link I found (let's see how long it lasts...) service.gm.com/dealerworld/vincards/From here you can select the year of GM vehicle you have and get the dealer "secret decoder" card. I'm sure many of you have seen VIN deciphering listed in text on many other sites, but this one is straight from the General himself and listed here as PDF documents that you can download and save, print, etc. I still don't understand the sequence numbering. Mine is in the 460,000 range and I know they didn't make that many in 1975... so what the??

From what I've heard Montes started at 400,000 for each year. All of mine are also in the 400 - 500,000s.

That may be accurate then, hetman. So....
The '75 is 461, 059 making it equal to 61,059?
The '76 is 587, 107 making it equal to 187, 107? Did they produce that many? Or maybe it started at 500,000 in 76, so it's really 87, 107.
The '78 is 487, 591 making it equal to 87, 591?
Great... now I'm going to be looking for production run quantities..... LOL

I like how they used a Monte VIN number on that. It doesnt actually say Z37 is Monte Carlo, it just says Coupe 2 Door Notchback Special. But Montes r Z37 cars. Camaros r Z28s and Cavaliers r Z24s, Luminas r Z34, and arent trucks Z71? Thats where the nomenclature came from for those decals.

Z71 is an option package on the trucks that includes off-road tires, oil pan and transfer case guards, more aggressive suspension. So not all trucks are Z71 equipped.

But isnt the VIN all Z71s? Or does that rule not apply to the 4wd 1/2T pickup.
I've only checked 1. It was not the Z71 package, but still read "Z71" in the actual VIN. That was just how GM VIN Series went.

Well, now I'm not sure on that Keith. It may also be year dependent, such as the 1988-1998 generation. Here is the VIN from my 2005 Avalanche, that is equipped with the Z71 package and there is no Z71 in the VIN. 3GNEK12Z75G250*** OK, before I completed this post, I did a Wiki- look-up. Here's the link to what they have to offer on the Z71, as a package anyway,: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Z71

U may be right, Jamie. The one that I was basing that statement on was indeed a 94-95. Maybe its only that generation.
