Well, I'm sure all of us have tried to make good intentions at one time or another to keep track of all the things we have done to our babies. Sometimes it's written in a notebook, in the back of the factory manual, a slip of paper here or there, or maybe just saving shop receipts. I have done all or some combination of these over the years..... and I always seem to slip and forget to document somethings... So I tried anew. A week or so ago the oldest boy and I did some work together on the 75 Monte Carlo and he was in his glory doing it all too. It maybe more that I wanted to document the good time he had and what he did help with more than anything, but here is how I decided to concur it this time. I made up my own little shop sheet to track everything. I tried to put all sorts of good info on there so it would be more useful to reference down the road (like part numbers of the parts I put on, and vehicle specifics.) Here it is....

Lol, Ive done this kind of thing before. I even put the ghost print on my "invoice". But, I always misplace that stuff, too.

never did a maintenance sheet, But I have every reciept filed for every car I have ever owned. When the car was junked, sold or traded in the file went with it. I have an entire file cabinet drawer for the 86, LOL!

Yup.... I've sent along the records and receipts with each car I've sold or traded as well. I've gotten funny looks from those receiving people too... ! I have a huge folder yet on the 1980 Monte. For the '75 & '76 I have put them into sheet protectors and keep them in a 3-ring binder on the book shelf, along with brochures, pictures, etc...

I keep a log of all the gas fill-ups including date and cost, and in that log I also write down each thing done to the car. I don't usually keep my receipts, however. This is a habit I picked up from my parents, who also did the same thing for ever car they owned.
It's neat looking back at records and receipts. I got a huge stack of them with the yellow 73 Landau I bought from Drix, all the way back to the March 15, 1973 bill of sale. One thing I gleaned from the first owner's records was that he got a steady 9-11 mpg (never higher) and that means one thing --- LEAD FOOT!!!! How do I know? Because my identically equipped (145 hp 350 ci) 73 Monte also got the exact same mileage, and I'm here to say that I always put the pedal to the metal at all times. So that means that this old man (he was 91 when he sold the car) kept that Monte floored at all times. That would also explain all the rock chips in the front; the paint is 100% original.

I used to keep fuel mileage logs, too. Stopped doing it once the mileage dropped below 10mpg. I've dropped down to 5mpg, but that was a lot of abuse on the car.

My folks used to always do the fuel mileage records too. I never consistently did this one for very long. I did last summer for a bit as I was trying hypermiling to save gas and ultimately money in my pocket. The Avalanche has the computer interface that shows the average economy (only... not instantaneous). I would normally average around 16 mpg, but I got that up to a 22mpg average by just driving carefully and coasting and keeping the speed down. The main thing I focused on was the RPM. It is the closest measure I have of instantaneous economy... more RPMs=more fuel spent (of course, down hill engine braking doesn't necessarily make RPM=fuel spent). I tried to keep it 1800RPM or lower, even on accelerating out from stops, etc. It is cool to look back and see that though.

Jaime, That is COOL! About the only records I keep are receipts, etc. (have an accordion folder for each of the 5 MCs) ... and, of course, miles/gallons of gas/date/place/mpg.
