...the automotive world? Personally, I got started at an early age. Due to my heart issues, I was never very active so I turned to what I could do ... play with my model cars. As I grew older, the love affair with the Monte Carlo started when Mom and Dad bought their '76 MC...and continued from there: www.chevyasylum.com/cort/mcstory.htmlSo...how about you? ...... automotive world...
My father always had stories from his teens and twenties about cars, his and others. My grandfather used to take me and my cousins to the "candy store" in the "candy car" which was a '66 Pontiac Catalina Convertible. How I used to love riding in that car with my grandfather. He'd passed away and the car just sat around. when I was about 13 or so, and not quite into cars, my one uncle decided to sell it because the floor pans were starting to rot. I didn't want him to, but he and my father said it wasn't worth fixing at the time. I cried that day, because it reminded me of those times when I'd go riding with my grandfather, and not just to the candy store either. So then I started my affinity with cars....
Interesting note: I learned years later that the '66 Pontiac had been my father's 2nd car. He'd traded in his used '58 Impala convertible on the Pontiac, brand new. He had the car down to Washington DC after he'd been drafted and was serving in basics. One fine day he and two buddies had gotten a day pass and headed out for some dinner in the city. When they were eating an afternoon thuderstorm rolled up and dumped. It rained so hard he could barely see across the street to his car..... top down ! Well, after dinner, they opened up the doors and the water ran out some more. The next several days on base were bright and sunny so he left it with the top down to dry. But my father says that is probably the reason the floor pans were rotting out faster than the rest of the car. I wish we still had it... I could have welded in some new pans....

Cars and specifically Monte Carlos
I started late. I had the Slot Car Tracks and Hot Wheels that I typically blew up, but I didn't really think about cars until I was about 13. Older brother started driving and I started to take off with a couple cars in the family when I was late 14. Been driving since, but my first car was a 78 Monte Carlo. A friend in H.S. had found a 81?? Gran Prix that I thought was cool as hell. I couldn't have the same kind of car and found a Monte. Remember, I knew nothing about cars ao I had to learn on my own, after all I couldn't afford repairs being in school and no real job. I fixed everything I could and learned what I could from any and everybody. Beleive me, a total brake job from Master Cylinder back to Wheel Cylinders was very intimidating at the time. After that experience I walked away with more knowledge, respect and a functioning car again. I never looked back, that's all it took to get me hooked.
BTW, my family were never into cars at all and car knowledge was slim around the house. And, shamefully I did go Monte-less for a number of years in between the 2nd and 3rd Montes.

One pic says it all! The picture on the left of my cake shows exactly the precise moment when My parents went wrong, LOL! And that car was a 68 Dodge Charger R/T with a 440. The pic on the right is just me in the 86 SS. 40 years of playing with cars, Not only as hot wheels, and tonka trucks when I was little to die cast cars and models in my teens, to real cars after that to present. I took my love affair with cars too far, I guess, being a mechanic, collecting, and showing cars. Hey nobody said I was normal! LOL! especially since I have owned 14 Montes in the last 25 years!

Cars were different when we grew up, so many nice muscle cars running the streets, now you bearly see cars flying around and racing. So i would say all the cars street racing and cruising.

Im just a tick younger than u 2 and I still don't remember all the cool cars running around. I'll admit that alot of my youth is fuzzy or even non-existent now, but I remember cars like LTDs, Fairmonts, Pintos, Pacers, Impalas.....You get the idea. I must have just missed the Chevelles and Mustang era.
Oh, nice pic Dave.

Hmm! Cars! Where do I start. From toys to models and bicycles to cars. Don't know really. I was the kid that would take things apart and was able to put them back together. None of my predicessors {father} were into cars althoughhe had some of the best of the time. So where the bug came from I couldn't say. Maybe it's the same kind of thing as a person favorite food ort.v. show. Dpon't know for sure but what I do know is that growing up during the "muscle car era" just fueled the fire. I took auto shop in high school and then got jobs as an auto mech. Even owned my own shop for awhile before health issues sidelined me. Always loved cars and not necessarily the more popular ones. I liked the Studebakers, the late 40s Plymouths, the Lincolns with the suicide doors. Unfortunately over the recent few years my interest shall we say has deminished some. Some due to health issues {because I can't go 12 - 16 hours at a whack like I used to} and some due to my current setup. The hotrod resides in the barn way out back and my tools are in the garage in the house. The water hose s are at the house also. And then there is the winter. I never thought that I would live in a place where I couldn't drive my "toys" all year round. But we are thinking of the positive tho. Spring is only 4 mths. away and the juices are starting to flow again. I think that it's time for another road trip with the SS.

My mother told me once all 4 of us were able to identify cars by makes at an early age. My best friend & I used to blow up our model cars and hot wheels with firecrackers when we were in grade school. I had an aunt who for just about every Christmas gave me a model kit. Oh the pain of what these desctroyed kits would be worth today. The hot wheels faired better as I still have several of them from my youth. When I was 12 there was a girl in my class I wanted a lot. She had an older brother named Terry who owned a '55 Chevy Two-Ten 2-door Sedan. It was red. Terry had buddies who owned '56 & '57 Chevies. I used to make the excuse of going over to help Terry & his buddies work on their cars, so I could see Terry's sister. In the meantime, I somehow learned a little about cars and decided I wanted a '55 Chevy, REAL BAD. A cousin of mine also owned a '55 2-door Hardtop at the time. He had more then his share of troubles with the car and I got to thinking, "Are all '55 Chevies this bad?" So the search was on for a '57 Chevy. I was very lucky that I got my first car at age 14. Couldn't even drive it home. My dad did. And he laughed the entire 10 trip and he remarked, "Boy you sure can pick em." See the car had been used as a parts car. Many pieces were missing. That's why the price of the car was $150. Not $400 for a decent, whole, running car like some were asking at the time for their '57 Chevies. My parents refused to pay that much for used car, plus a car for a 14 year old. But it was intended to be my high school graduation present I got 4 years before I graduated. I saved my lunch money to buy parts for the car. My father would not allow me to work while I was in high school He said education was more important then a pay check at this time in my life. He was speaking from experience. He went to work when he was 13 to help support his dad and family. Now it's 36 years later and I still own my first car. ;D
