the SS's current status is mid engine swap. so i figure why not swap out the trans too? word has it that mine is a 200r4 out of a v6 monte. which might explain why it likes to shift too early. i'm not a fan since i like to go fast. so. i found a th350 for cheap. what should i look for? any common problems? would my current torque converter work? fyi, i'm swapping in a temporary 305 out of an 84 ss. dad's motor needs a rebuild. and a cam. lol. anyway.. input is appreciated as i don't know crap about transmissions. ;D

Jen! Welcome back! Wondering what happened to you!
Ok, first, the 200R4 out of a V6? this was in your Dad's car? Somepne was playing around if it was. But the short shift could and is most likely caused by the detent cable being misadjusted. If you remove the air filter assembly and you see the trans cable, on the back side of the bracket there is a "Button" on the cable assembly, Push that down and the cable into the bracket. Then go into the car and mash the pedal to the floor, that should give you a starting point. Then you can move the cable in or out from there [in small incriments]to adjust the shift to where you like it. In Going to a TH350, the crossmember is different, the torque convert needs to be changed and posibly the flywheel too, Not 100% sure about the convertor pattern. Pre 85 Motors had a 2 piece real main seal, while 86 and later had a one piece. So swapping a Motor temporary might be a bit more than it's worth.
Hope this helps some

the whole transmission business confuses me.. i was told the trans came out of a v6 car and then i got under there myself and it's a 2004r. so i don't know. but thanks for giving me all that info on the different parts id need for the th350.. i dont think im up for all that right now. and im throwing the 84 motor in there to get the car running while i learn how to work on/rebuild the original motor. its gonna be a long process im thinking. heh

If you've never done an engine swap before, it can be a long dragged out process. So the best advice I can give you is, make sure you LABEL EVERYTHING!!!! Doesn't matter if you plan on using it or not, label every wire with a piece of masking tape, put bolts in jars or baggies and label what they are for. Otherwise months down the road, you'll be wondering "what bolt goes there?" or "where does this wire go?"

Baggies r the greatest until u lose an entire box of them that had parts in them. Oops.
I also find digi pics work out great for the reassembly. BUT, we r also here to help and can work out where things go if u lose your way. Personaaly, rebuilding the SBC is an easy task. I've rebuilt a good dozen of them and machined a few of them myself. Get yourself a book titled "How to Rebuild Your Small Block Chevy", its great for beginners and I've read it a few times myself.
Best of luck and keep us updated. Too bad we r so far away or we would definitely help out in person. And if u need anything give us a shout. I have spare parts in the attic also. AND 1 of the most important things to do is use GMs or Comp Cams break in lube on a new flat tappet camshaft and properly break that cam in. You will need a fan blowing on the radiator too.

More info. If u need a replacement 200-4r, I may have 1 if Dave doesnt need it. 200-4rs also use a 153 tooth flexplate because the bellhousing is so small anf TH350s and TH350Cs typically use a 168 tooth. Starters will differ because of this. No problem switching that, though. Stay away from TH350s with the dual bolt pattern on the bellhousing. They will shift funny because they r "universal". U will rev higher on the intersate.
FWIW, engine assembly is pretty easy, u just need to measure alot of things. A basic rebuild is easy, blueprinting is very time consuming, but worthwhile.

Now my 86 on the other hand has a 350 V8, rebuilt 200r4 w/2500 stall and a 3.73 posi, this trans shifts way to early for my likeing as well. Does you car have the posi rear ? is so maybe thats part of the early shift problem ?

Not the tranny expert, but posi shouldnt matter. Gear ratio and governor on the trans will. Bunch of internal stuff I dont even want to know about.
