Yep, I can't figure out how to get my nuts off. And I do feel really stupid asking such a question about such a simple thing, but how in heck do you get the top nuts off the front shock absorbers (2nd gen)?! I'm trying to change the shocks on my 74, which probably hasn't been done in at least 25 years. It seems simple, hold the top of the shock bolt with some kind of wrench and twist off the nut, but how do you get down in that hole in the upper control arm with any tools at all? My factory repair manual doesn't give any clue. It also doesn't help that the bolt's a bit rusty, but a bit of WD40 should loosen it up enough to come off. I don't want to take a torch to the area to heat it up either, with all the plastic and rubber in the vicinity.
Help me get my nuts off! LOL

Well first I was wondering why you needed help with 4 kids already! LOL!
Been a long time since I have been under the hood of a second gen, And since your plastic wheel wells cover the shock mounts, I usually raise the car and remove the wheels, then with a socket and an extention start to work the top of the shock back and forth, then rachet it a bit then work it back and forth until it breaks, The the lower bolts I just take out and the shock drops right through the lower control arm. Like I said, It's been a while, if you can post some pics showing the top of the shock, I'll be able to help better. Good luck Mike!

It doesnt seem like it would matter, but I always found it easier with an air ratchet to rock it back and forth until u break the top off. 1/2" dr ratchet does it, but seems to take a lot longer. They make a tool for this. I have 1, its pretty much worthless.
Good luck with your nuts!

Dave, don't give me too much credit yet! I only have 2 kids that I know of. Thanks for the tips, guys. I'll have to take off the wheel to try and see if there's another way to get at those nuts. But the control arm blocks everything and it seems only accessible from the top.

I know 3rd and 4th r different, but thats how I typically have done it. Remove wheel and have plenty of room after the suspension drops all the way down.
