ok i am getting stuff together for a project hopefuly i will beable to start next year (most likely will take longer)
but when you swap out the 4bbl carb for a TPI type set up what do you do for the fuel pump and tank? if i remeber right the carb tank doese not have baffls like the FI tanks do.
if you are woundering the project is putting a 3400SFI V6 from a grand am into a G-body most likely going to be a 81-87 Grand Prix
thanks for any help with ths unusual swap

V6 TBI tanks r great for the swap. Use Camaro fuel pump or whatever is required for fuel supply. V6 TBI prob work great.
Replace all rubber hose with fuel injection rated hose. Its about $5/ft.
If accessories r an issue from the FWD car engine, then start scouting 2.8L S10s.
U seem to like different. Which is OK with us. Best of luck and keep us informed.

Nothing wrong with different. I still want the Cummins 5.9L Turbo in a Monte. Sweet.

Nothing wrong with being different! In fact thats what makes us unique!
But I think that a 3400 might be a little under powered, I could be wrong. Please post the progress and let us know how things turn out!
The regular tank will work also, you just need a sending unit from a 94-95 S10 pick up, but you may need to shorten the part the goes into the tank. I believe the 4.3L G-body sending unit will work in the regular tank also.
Also look into a mid to late 80's Camaro/Firebird. Some came with the 2.8/3.1 set up. The brackets should work and you can get all the information you need from one of their manuals.

cool and i will keep you all updated. in the spring i am selling the GP and will buy the car then and start from there. the hardest part will be engine mounts and clearancing the trans for the starter (it is on the driver side unlike the RWD 2.8/ 3.1/ 3.4 where it is on the pass. side)

I'm gonna have to disagree with 2mm this time. the 3400 is not a bad engine ans is better than the early 3.8-231s. 305s werent the hottest either. But if u put a power adder onto it, i wont make fun of u at all. Especially since it would prob make u quicker than a lot of V8s.
Not dropping hints or anything here.

Keith, not making fun of anyone, and I didn't say it was a bad engine, Just feel it's underpowered N/A in a large full frame vehicle. Now adding a Turbo or Nitrous to it makes it a different story.
true the whopping 185 HP 305 is seriously underpowered as well, Heck I've seen 3.8's run away from camaros with the 5.0!

there are peaple getting 275 whp N/A out of these things thats LT1 territory right there and all they are doing is porting the heads UIM/LIM and putting in a diffrent cam i might be using a 3500 though (the newer vertion of the 60* V6) they make 215 HP stock. they have a forged crank oil squirters, canted valves, aluminum heads, roller lifters, roller falcrum rockers 300+ crank N/A is vary doable ;D and i will still get 27+MPG highway

Whats the TQ rating on the 3400 and 3500? TQ is king to get a big sled moving anyways. U have my attention and I'm curious now.
No worries Dave. Lot of GM engines were underpowered anyway. 4.1L and 4.3L were worse than the 5.0s.
Hows about an 8100? or 6.6 Duramax? Now we're talking.

i would love to put a 5.9 cummins in a G but i think it might be a tad to long (it would also be cool if i get my old car back since it was born a deisle lol) the 3400 is rated at 185 HP@ 5200 and 215 TQ@ 4000 the 3500 is rated at 215 HP@ 5800 and 225 TQ@ 4400

Seriously? That is impressive! OK, I take back my statement! Now post up some links showing info on where these guys are building up the extra HP! What cam are they using? Who makes it? Inquiring Minds want to know!!!!
Maybe a Cummins would fit into a second Gen? Lots more room under that hood!

here is the site 60degreev6.com here are some specific posts as well here is the dyno. the car is FWD so the numbers are higher but the ~316 crank power is stock 05+ mustang power out of a 6 ;D 60degreev6.com/forum/f96/new-dyno-results-t41076here is the build www.v6z24.com/jbodyforum/my-07-build-its-alive-t90913.htmlhere are sites with parts. there are no real new cams most are regrinds from a solid billet. (the 60* have the stupid press on cam lobes) all heads are just ported stockers they are preaty good stock. wot-tech.com/shop/for the fist step the engine will be stock to work out bugs and to learn how to tune an obd1 system (i have been spoild with obd2) after i get all the work doen and it has no problems build time ;D after the N/A build i will put boost to it thinking twin turbo

I think a 5.9 will fit with some firewall mods. And a much stronger frame and trans and driveshaft and rear end.
Keep us updated on the build. and if u decide on a 5.9, holler at us and we will be there for the startup.
