NASCAR changes its points system!

It's about time!!! This should make it more interesting and a more even playing field:


NASCAR is replacing the complicated scoring system it has used since 1975 with a more straightforward format.

None of the changes for the 2011 season announced by chairman Brian France at the NASCAR Hall of Fame on Wednesday came as much of a surprise. NASCAR officials had been briefing teams for almost two weeks on the changes in an effort to give competitors feedback on the direction being taken.

A race winner will receive 43 points under the new system, and the points will decrease down to 1 for the 43rd-place driver. There will be three bonus points for the winner, one bonus point for every driver who leads a lap, and one bonus point to the driver that leads the most laps.

The maximum points available now will be 48 per race.

I like it. BUT, should offer more to the leader of most laps instead of just the 1+1. Someone who dominates should be awarded a couple more. And what about the polesitter? Wheres the bonus point for that?

I agree, the most laps leader should get a bit more. And there was no mention about the pole. Either way it should be a closer season. And with luck the guy who is most consistant int he top 5 will come out as the champion.

I'd like to see this points system in Busch also. But with the "shootout" style points system from cup. Top 10 are reset. Would make a great finish to the season and maybe bring in some fans to the 2nd tier racers. And kick out any full time Cup guys from the final 10 races of Busch. Something to promote those drivers. But, the Cup guys do bring money to Busch also. Hard call.

I think no full time Cup series drivers in the Nationwide series would be a great idea all season long. The 2nd tier racers should have all the glory before they move up.

I wonder if the truck series will change also?

After thinking about it, its not a whole lot different. If the point spread is 1 point between finishing positions vs. 5 then nothing has changed other than the value of it. If u finish first and then a string of poor finishes, as a percentage u will still be in the same position and the same percentage of points back. If u put a "0" behind everything it will look more impressive and appear to be more of a point spread when its actually not. As long as the bonus points stay the same by percentage. And since there was a 5 point spread between first and second in the old system and lap leader bonus points were 5 and leading most laps was 5 points then nothing changed in the top 10 positions.

But, in the old system the 11th-43rd place points spreads were 4s, 3s, and 2s (maybe 1s). So the new points system will benefit them because it will appear they are closer to the front runners. It will appear they are getting a couple extra points in the old system.

Or I could just shut up and keep watching Road Racing.

Yeah, the smaller totals is easier to follow, But MW being 110 point out of first is hard to catch up. Seeing it's only been 3 weeks. maybe a win soon will change that.

And truex is a good driver, so there is a good chance of that.

BTW, I got one of the NAPA/Truex Jr. NASCAR schedule magnets, Pretty cool, but since it's on my tool box at work, I keep forgetting to look at it to see where the race is, LOL!

I didn't think so. I think he is going to run a small handful. Restrictor plates basically. That way he can push his cars to the front if he doesn't wreck them first. My T-Shirts that I ordered still haven't shown up-Capps or Truex ones.

funny as I look at the Current standings, I see last years Chase Dirvers are scattered all over.

Denny Hamlin is 21, Jeff Burton is 25, Carl Edwards is in first, Jeff Gordon is 16. But with this new point system, it looks like it might be easier for them to catch up.
