I'm not much of a race fan anymore, but I still like to watch whatever events are broadcast on the "regular" networks, particularly FOX and ABC. So ... I sure appreciate you calling SPEED on my behalf. How long did it take you to hammer out that deal with them? 1 day to go!!! Changes Aplenty In Rolex Series For Season-Opening Rolex 24 At Daytona Better buy a program if you’re going to be at Daytona International Speedway for this weekend’s historic 50th Anniversary Rolex 24 At Daytona. There are plenty of changes in store for followers of the GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series in 2012, with new cars in both the Daytona Prototype and GT divisions. The Daytona Prototype gets its second updating since its introduction as the Rolex Series’ premier class in 2003 and both Ferrari and Audi built cars specially designed for the production-based class, joining a record 46-car GT entry for the Daytona classic. Also new is the North American Endurance Championship presented by Visit Florida, a new series-within-a-series. Both drivers and teams will score points in the Rolex 24 At Daytona, Sahlen’s Six Hours of The Glen at Watkins Glen International, and the three-hour race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The third generation Daytona Prototype is distinguished by an all-new body with a smaller greenhouse for better proportion. The new regulations provide more potential for brand character and design innovation and GRAND-AM offered auto manufacturers the opportunity to field branded body designs. General Motors was first to step up to this challenge with the first manufacturer-specific DP, with the Corvette Daytona Prototype which is making its debut this weekend after dominating the Roar Before the Rolex 24 testing earlier this month. While the five Corvette DPs competing in 2012 all feature Pratt & Miller bodywork, the cars use three different chassis manufacturers. The Action Express Racing’s two car entry (David Donohue and Darren Law in the No. 5, joined by Joao Barbosa, JC France and Terry Borcheller in the No. 9) and Spirit of Daytona (Richard Westbrook and Antonio Garcia in the No. 90) use the Coyote chassis. The No. 10 SunTrust Corvette DP of Ricky Taylor and Max Angelelli is built on a Dallara platform, while the No. 99 GAINSCO Auto Insurance Corvette of 2007 and 2009 DP champs Alex Gurney and Jon Fogarty returns with the Riley chassis. Riley also is offering the DPG3, which is being used by Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates, Starworks Motorsport and Michael Shank Racing. Ganassi drivers Scott Pruett and Memo Rojas, going for their third consecutive DP title in the No. 01 TELMEX BMW/Riley, return with fellow defending Rolex 24 winners Joey Hand and Graham Rahal this weekend. Pruett won the 2004 crown with Max Papis, and then joined Rojas in winning the 2008 and 2010 titles. Ganassi also won the 2006 DP team title. The team also returns the all-star lineup of its No. 02 Target/TELMEX BMW/Riley, featuring Juan Pablo Montoya, Jamie McMurray, Dario Franchitti and Scott Dixon. Ferrari, Audi Join Wide-Open GT Battle While the new Daytona Prototypes lead the field, GRAND-AM is anticipating a battle for the ages in GT, with the new offerings from Ferrari and Audi – along with the addition of Dodge Viper and a new Ford Mustang – joining Porsche, Camaro, Mazda and BMW. Ferrari built the F458 Italia Grand Am specifically for the Rolex Series. AIM Autosport joined forces with FXDD to field the No. 69 for Emil Assentato and Jeff Segal, while Risi Competizione, Extreme Speed Motorsports and two-time Daytona 500 winner Michael Waltrip’s AF-Waltrip will be competing in the Rolex 24. Audi races in the Rolex Series for the first time with the new Audi R8 GRAND-AM. Perennial Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge powerhouse APR Motorsport was first to step up, fielding the No. 51 for Dion von Moltke and Dr. Jim Norman. United Arab Emirates-based Oryx Racing also joins the fray with Humaid Al Masaood and Steven Kane. Jeffrey Earnhardt leads Rick Ware Racing’s assault on the GT title in a new Ford Mustang, while Jan Heylen and Doug Peterson pilot the new Dodge Viper for Racers Edge Motorsports. Last year’s GT title was decided by a single point, with Andrew Davis and Leh Keen taking the title in Brumos Racing’s first season in the Rolex Series’ GT class. The drivers of the No. 59 Porsche GT3 will be challenged by a host of competitors, including Porsche rivals TRG (Steve Bertheau and Spencer Pumpelly in the No. 67) and Magnus Racing (2011 NASCAR Sprint Cup rookie of the year Andy Lally and John Potter in the No. 44). A total of 24 Porsches will race in the Rolex 24. Jordan Taylor – who finished second in the 2011 fight – has a new teammate in former champ Paul Edwards in the No. 88 Autohaus Camaro. Stevenson Motorsports returns as a team to watch with Robin Liddell now joined by John Edwards in the No. 57 Camaro. Mazda returns with three solid teams. Sylvain Tremblay and Jonathan Bomarito are back in the No. 70 SpeedSource Mazda RX-8; Dempsey Racing sees Patrick Dempsey and Joe Foster back in the No. 40, leading a two-car entry. Team Sahlen is back with three cars, including the No. 42 TheRaceSite.com entry led by Wayne Nonnamaker and Dane Cameron. Turner Motorsport returns the No. 94 BMW M3, once again to be driven by Bill Auberlen and 2011 Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge GS champion Paul Dalla Lana. They will be joined by Boris Said and Dirk Werner. They willl field a second car at the Rolex 24, led by Michael Marsal and Billy Johnson.

Jan Heylen will be inviting fans along for the ride in this weekend’s 50th Anniversary Rolex 24 At Daytona. Fans participating in the Fanwalk prior to the 3:30 p.m. start of Saturday afternoon’s milestone event will be invited to autograph the No. 87 3-Dimensional.com Dodge Viper co-driven by Heylen, Doug Peterson, Maxime Soulet and Emilio Valverde. The yellow Viper has red accents located on different parts of the car – and fans will be invited to sign those areas. “Hopefully, a lot of fans will come over and sign our car,” Heylen said. “We’re hoping to do this at every race this season. We eventually might tie it to a charity, but the important thing now is that it’s a cool idea and nice for the fans. It gives them a good connection to the race.” A native of Belgium, Heylen worked his way up the open-wheel ladder. He landed a Champ Car ride with Dale Coyne Racing and Conquest Racing in 2006-07, competing in 23 races, with his best finish second at Circuit Assen in the Netherlands in 2007. He relocated to the Tampa Bay area during the course of his travels – and found a new home. “I never left Tampa Bay,” he said. I loved the weather and enjoyed living in America,” Heylen also loves the racing in the U.S. After competing in GT racing in Europe last year, he’s set for a full season with Racers Edge Motorsports. “I came here for the good racing,” Heylen said. “I’m looking forward to a good season for Dodge – and we hope to meet a lot of fans who come and sign our car.”

The race has been quite exciting so far, but the best is yet to comem The final hour!
I feel bad for Audi, neither of their cars have been working out, clutch issues, electrical issues and traction have put both cars way behind. Currently one is 258 laps behind the other is 360 laps behind.
The New Corvette Prototype looks great and was dominating in the first half of the race, come this morning none are even on the lead lap, 3 are down by 2 laps and one by 3. Plus the Suntrust machine of Wayne Taylor broke in the first 14 laps and has been out since.
Ford DPs seem to be the ones to beat in the second half. While the Porches are just killing the competition in the GT class.
Just over 3 hours left to go, things can always change!

NOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The Gnassi 01 DP lost the first 2 gears! After making a drive thru penalty for speeding on pit lane, then having to swap the gear box, Pruitt has dropped to 6th place! I was hoping he'd atleast finish in the top 3. He just didn't have any speed against the Fords.
AJ Almendinger is really tearing up the track. Nice to see a NASCAR regular being out in front, even though I believe he has more road course experianced than oval.
Even sadder to see all the Chevy powered cars have fallen off the pace. Best vette is in 5th.
Keith, I was wondering why MWR's Ferrari was dropping. But atleast theyare doing better than the Audi.

Sad to see a Ford win, But Michael Shank is a great guy and well deserving of the win. AJ pulled it off!
Then The Magnus Team brings their Porche in for the GT class win. With NY native Andy Lally makes it even cooler

Heck of a race. Period. Lots of new stuff out there definitely made some things get mixed up. They will get the Chevy DP Corvettes where they need to be. Just wish they all ran one chassis instead of 3. It would help the teams in the long run I would think.

Yeah, I know they will work on the vettes and then by the next few races they will be a lot more competitive.
As for the chassis, I understand the way your thinking, But then again, that would lead to something like the NASCAR deal, just about everything is the same. the same body with different head and tail light decals, same wheels, same brakes, same chassis specs......

Point taken. But if you are an up and coming team, why not choose what a successful team is using? And lean on them for support? Rolex Series is good for that kind of help. They could "borrow" an engineer or two to help solve problems if they were already familiar with the platform. Or I could be overthinking it and they may be that similar.

In that scenerio, yes, I agree. But with established teams, that would take the competition out of it.
