OK, so this question has kicked around in the past. The numbers I list here are from a factory build sheet for a 1980 Chevrolet Monte Carlo with the Buick Turbo 231 V-6 and 2:41 Positract Axle GVWR for the car is 4414 GAWR F is 2169 GAWR R is 2245 Ship Weight F is 1899 Ship Weight R is 1297 So this makes the total car weight 3196. GAWR = Gross Axle Weight Rating: This is the weight each axle is designed to safely carry. It includes the entire weight of the vehicle, occupants, cargo, trailer tongue weight, etc; but distributed between front and rear axles. GVWR = Gross Vehicle Weight Rating: This is the rating the entire vehicle can carry, including it's own weight. For more details, see this article: auto.howstuffworks.com/auto-parts/towing/towing-capacity/vehicle%20/gvwr.htmSo if the GVW of the Carlo is 3196, and the GVWR is 4414, that means you should not put more than 1218 of additional weight in the Carlo.
