While I'm not on the West Coast, I'm in the SOUTH West, and to me, thats close enough! haha.. here is my current work with the interior, I dont remember when I started, but its taken quite a while! In between work, my band, and just having money available for the next bunch of parts.. here we go!! The beginning, tearing out the old interior. You can see the yellow paint in the rear window, this was the cars original color, the way my dad bought it in 1992. The floor was rusty in quite a few spots. It's an AZ car, but it had worn/no weather stripping for quite a while, along with the rear window leak. But after my awesome friend who has restored cars his whole life got my car.. Its better than new!! Insulation!!! Just waiting to be installed.. and as of today, I have been busy test fitting the panels. Although I got all the insulation placed, I still have to trim some edges here and there so the panels fit correctly. It's not final, but here are a couple shots of how its going to look! I know, I know... "why are there still tan/brown pieces?" Well.. the bottom of the console still needs painted to match. The one that was part of the console I bought a few years ago had broken parts, so I'm reusing my old bottom. I have black lower door panels, but the uppers have to wait until I can get good unbroken replacements. The seats are also going to wait, since they will need some special work to get them how I want, and seats arent really cheap either.. But so far so good. I drove it today and you wouldnt believe how quiet it rides! Even with the suspension in need of some work. As for now, the somewhat two-tone black and tan/brown doesnt look bad at all!! I'm going to take the car later this week to have my headliner put in correctly (I dont want to mess it up doing it myself) and today I removed my wheels, and cleaned them up really well so I can polish them. I have two 15x8's coming for the rear, and I want to the two front wheels to look just as good! I use to polish them once a month, and they looked better then chrome! more pics and updates as I get some more work done

Keep up the good work, Mike! That's a tip-top Monte there.
Oh, I agree with you about the trunk space in Montes. It's perfectly shaped and sized to put a bunch of guitar cases back there. I noticed that when I carried my base guitar 20 years ago. It's like they designed the trunk with that in mind!

Looking great! And To tell you the truth, I like the Tan/Brown interior with the white. It looks like it was updated to match the 6th gen interior. But nobody ever said I was Normal, LOL!
How easy was it working with the Dyna Mat? Next Fall, My son's interior is coming out and were replacing the head liner, carpet and whatever else we come across.

Mike those dont look like swivel seats to me. What up wit that. Really? why don't they? They are most definitely swivels, and the original ones at that! My dad had them re-upholstered once, back he bought the car, they use to be vinyl. I plan on getting them re-done in the original patterns, but I havent decided on cloth, vinyl like the originals, or going all out with some leather. I'm hoping it is possible to refoam them, with some extra contours on the sides, kind of like my mustang seats. DAVE! (lol), the dynamat is very easy to work with!! I got the Dynaliner, its great for behind the panels and the ceiling. It has a peel and stick backing, and its easy to cut with good scissors, or a razor knife. It's a little expensive tho, thats the reason why I got the jute/foil insulation for the rest of the car. Dynamat also makes a lot of different kinds of stuff depending on the application. Today I spent my hour and a half of good daylight after work hand polishing the two front wheels. I started by hand just to knock off the first layer of tarnish and to take the lines out from the degreaser and acid I used to clean them. I reached through and did a small spot on the inside of the wheel, and that will shine just like the outsides! Tomorrow I'm hoping I have time to get the jack out, and take the front two off, and polish the hell out of them with the drill/flitz buff ball, and a whole can of Meguiers Hot Wheels polish. I remember when I use to do the wheels once, sometimes twice a month. They looked SO good. I'm going into the next big step of restoring my Monte Carlo, and I couldnt be anymore excited. Interior, wheels/tires, new Holley carb/electric fuel pump with a good tune, and hopefully getting my exhaust customized with removable cats and possibly some different mufflers!!

Cool, But I'm Dave, LOL! I think in the fall, I'll be getting some and redo his car before layiong in the new carpet. And Maybe We'll do it behind the side panels too. The Exhaust system were planning on using is going to have a nice Rumble, so we'd like to keep the rumble outside!

Woooops, for whatever reason I was thinking "toomanymontes" was him, makes sense at least right? lol sorry! The jute/foil insulation that I got from OPGI is great, and a lot more affordable than the dynamat, but if you can afford the dynamat, go for it! its great stuff too. I also have some heavy rubber insulation that came with my carpet kit, I'm not even done putting all the panels in, and I'm already surprised at how much quieter my Monte is. Although a big part of it is having it all bare metal for about 5 months too..

Very nice. Should be quiet inside and it also helps with A/C efficiency.
But, Dave, y would u want the rumble outside?

So as an update, I'm going to take the car monday to get an estimate and schedule a time to get my headliner put in, upholster the sunvisors, and to get my rear shelf upholstered. I'm not sure if I want it carpeted to match the carpet on the floor, of If I want it done in black vinyl like the door panels will be. I also made a mistake with the backspacing on the wheels. I measured mine wrong, and got the wrong ones. Mine are 3-3/4 not 4-1/2. SO I sent the wheels back on fri, hopefully an exchange at Jegs is a speedy process!

But, Dave, y would u want the rumble outside? LOL! I'm tired of the drone of the exhaust on long drives, I do love the sound of the motor when getting on it, but cruising at 3300 RPM, it will give you a headache after a while.

This Thurs. I'm dropping the car off to get my headliner properly installed, my sun visors done, and the blue rear shelf done up in black carpet stuff. Then hopefully Fri or Sat I can get the 3 rear windows re-tinted, and this weekend I can start putting it all back together while I wait on the wheels to arrive. I talked to the guy at Kustom Trim, and he makes doing the rears of the bucket seats easy to dye black, so I'm really hoping that is the best way to go. I agree with him that keeping them hard plastic is better than putting cloth over them.
More pics when I get something more done..

LMAO Dave, need to stay on go peddle longer to avoid the drone. yet I need to back off to avoid the cops, LOL! drix, that interior is going to look killer when done, I'm a tad worried about the seat backs though, My experiance is the dye/paint peels when scratched. I hope the guy knows his stuff.

This shop has been in town for years, and I was reccomended to them by a friend at work who has more classic cars then I'd ever know what to do with, and has had lots of work done there. I believe that its all in the prep work when it comes to dying plastic, Just like paint on the outside!

Actually, Drix and 2MM you are both right on the vinyl dye.
To Drix's point, if done properly in the prep work the dye will adhere just fine and will look great, as if original. Just like your body work and paint work. I had done the beige in my white 80 over to gray with great success and little evidence of those pieces having been anything but gray. In fact, my original door panel uppers were so nice with the beige and the (plastic) burl wood trim and upholstered fabric, I couldn't bring myself to ripping them apart to dye and change the fabric. So I got another pair of upper door panels that were dark burgundy and dyed those gray. You'd never know they were different. Again, I spent several hours cleaning them all down with Fantastic and paper towels first, and then scrubbing them with the dye prep and cleaner and scrub brushes to get into all the crevices. If you don't get the crevices properly cleaned, you will end up with the dirt from in there getting sprayed out into the fresh dye and also the dye will adhere to the dirt and not the panels. When the dirt is cleaned out later, you will have bare spots, revealing the original vinyl material underneath.
And to Dave's point, if scratched, deep enough, the original color will show through. Just like paint on the outside of your car. You scratch it, you see what's underneath. The ONLY ways to avoid that are to get whole new vinyl pieces that are in the color you want, or cover it over with something else of the color you want that is more resilient to scratching and won't rip through to see the material underneath.

Lookin' good, drix! Dang ... except for my bench seat, we shoulda swapped interiors. I would rather have that beige/tan ... since that is what was in my parents' former '76 MC. You could've had my black interior. Course, that might not have looked the best on mine, if only because of the red pinstripping on it ... it would've featured 3 colors instead of 2 (black, tan, red vs. the current black and red). Course, I still have some tan pinstripping left over from previous use ... I coulda swapped the pinstripping, too, I suppose. Lookin' forward to seeing more pics, drix! Drix, He should know then. Like I said, my experiance wasn't all that great, I attempted to do it myself. Like Jamie said, I scrubed, used all kind of prep products that was recommended and used the spray on dye. 2 months later it started to peal and flake where it got tagged.

'A Long December' My old tan interior was the original, except for the carpet and the tops of the seats, although I did have the original carpet for quite a while too, but after getting the car painted in 2002, the carpet made it look pretty shabby. I will post some pics tomorrow after the headliner, shelf, and visors get done and I'm home from work. I'm getting the 3 rear windows re-tinted too, THEN I can start putting it back together. All those new black screws, tight fit panels, BLACK! I can't wait. I hope my wheels show up soon!! Where is that tracking number....

Hey everyone. I got the headliner, visors, and rear shelf done on Thurs. I talked to my tint buddy yesterday, and he's going to try and make time for Tues. Which for me means that I cant put the rear interior in yet, BUT I can put in the front! I put the A Pillar covers on, the front trim, got the map light working, and did the passenger side kick panel. Then I finished my time after work today just vacuuming the carpet, and cleaning out/organizing my trunk. I havent seen the bottom of it in a couple months. My tracking number from fedex says the wheels will be here Monday. So tint tues, tires wed or thurs. Also talked to the guy at Kustom Trim, and gave me a sweet price on getting the front and rear seats done, including plastic dying the backs and bases of the front two buckets, and doing some foam work on the buckets too. So I might be getting those done sooner than I expected..

Oh man that looks great!!!! Funny how sometimes simple things get put off for years and then when they are done, you wonder why you didn't do it earlier. I know when I did my interior over a period of 10 years, I was amazed.
